"Hello Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I know that this issue has been discussed in part by other faculty and classes, but I'm sending this out in mass because urgent action is needed immediately. For years, an extremely controversial "Orphan Works" bill has been being pushed for. The Senate has just passed this bill. The simple and short explanation is that it is a poorly crafted bill which significantly erodes any copyright protection artists have over their work. Regardless of how you may personally feel about copyright concerns, this is extremely detrimental to most professional artists, designers, and photographers. The Illustrators Partnership (
[link]) the Graphic Artists Guild (
[link]) and The American institute of Graphic Arts (
[link]) have heavily lobbied against this bill. A quick search on the Internet will reveal how ridiculous this situation is. I just wrote Congress to oppose the Orphan Works Bills. Please do the same. It takes less than two minutes.

[link]As an art teacher, my suggestion to art students is to take action now and spread the word to every other artist you know. Unfortunately, this isn't a silly chain letter, but a real situation which could have dramatic effects on the way artists can make a living in this country for the rest of our lives.
